This week our ‘Super Six’ story was ‘All Pigs are Beautiful’’ by Dick King Smith. A story book combined with lots of different facts about a variety of pigs which made the children very curious about learning about different types of animals and their similarities and differences.
Our ‘Drawing Club’ focus was Farmer Duck by Martin Waddell. The story of a hardworking duck, who has the very bad luck of living with a lazy farmer. The duck cooks and cleans, tends the fields and cares for the other animals on the farm – and all while the famer lies in bed! That is until the day the animals decide to take action ... and come to the rescue with a simple, but heroic plan.
This week our rainbow challenges have been:
Maths – taking away number sentences using a 10s frame and counters
Fine motor – cut and stick the baby animals and match them to their mothers
Literacy – picture caption writing
Funky fingers – peg the story pictures in order to retell the story of Farmer Duck
Creative –make a unique looking duck using the different craft resources
Phonics – read the words and write them next to the picture
ICT – find the missing letter to complete the word (Balloon Phonics)
In maths this week Reception have been looking at shapes and making shape pictures using different sized triangles. We have been looking at home shapes tesselate and been investigation tangrams. We have been consolidating our subtraction learning during Ten Town time where the children have been given 5 sums each day. Next week we will be moving onto a set of different calculations which include both addition and subtraction to support the children being confident at recognising both + and – and how to complete these using a tens frame.
Nursery have been looking at capacity this week and have been investigating full, half full and empty when playing in the water tray with different sized containers.
This weeks nursery rhyme has been ‘When Goldilocks went to the house of the Bears’ which can be found using this link: When Goldilocks went to the house of the bears - BBC Teach
In phonics this week Reception have continued to work in their groups recapping Set 2 sounds with Mrs Whaley and Mrs Parker when reading and writing different words. The children in Miss Protheroe’s group have been learning the first few Set 3 sounds and Mrs Whaley’s group will be moving onto this from next week.
On Thursday morning we went outside and retold the story of Farmer Duck. Everyone had a turn at taking on the role of the character and after we read the story a couple of times the children were able to add the dialogue themselves and independently told the story.
We have continued to make the most out of the brighter and warmer weather this week and have enjoyed spending time in the EYFS garden and using the climbing equipment on the wood chips. We set ourselves a challenge to see if we could complete a circuit of the horse shoe shape equipment without falling off – some of us managed to do it and everyone had great perseverance.
Next week our ‘Super Six’ book is ‘Wake up time on Bumble Farm’ which is a TWINKL original story and our Drawing Club focus is the traditional tale of The 3 Little Pigs.
