10.04.25 The Scarecrow's Wedding

11.04.25

This week our ‘Super Six’ story was ‘The Scarecrow’s Wedding’ by Julia Donaldson. Two scarecrows, Betty O'Barley and Harry O'Hay, are planning the perfect wedding. But wicked scarecrow, Reginald Rake, has other ideas and almost ruins their special day. Harry must become a hero before he and Betty can have the wedding of their dreams.

Our ‘Drawing Club’ focus was the original animation of ‘Pink Panther. We have enjoyed listening to the music by Henri Mancini and Mr Hetherington brought his trumpet in to play the classic song for us. We have enjoyed watching all the antics Pink Panther gets up to and the chaos he causes.

This week our rainbow challenges have been:

Maths – show double 1,2,3,4, and 5 using the counters

Fine motor – colour by number

Literacy – what might you see on a farm caption writing (inked to core book last week)

Funky fingers – use the tweezers to pick up the different sized objects to stack (haybales) to match the quantity

Creative – colour mixing to do an observational painting of the blossom

Phonics – read the words and match them to the picture

ICT – find the missing letter to complete the word (Balloon Phonics)

In maths this week Reception have sharing equal amounts between teddies, plates, small world toys etc. They have really concentrated and placed 1 in front of each object before moving onto 2,3,4,5 etc. We used a dice to tell us hw many each object needed so practised out subitising too. In Ten Town this week we have been investigating the number 18 and doing a mixture of addition and subtraction calculations.

During our nursery rhyme time this week we have been recapping the different songs from this term. All the links for these songs are on the weekly blogs which are still on the class page of the website if you would like to revisit them.

In phonics this week Reception have continued to work in their groups recapping Set 2 sounds with Mrs Whaley and Mrs Parker when reading and writing different words. The children in Mrs Whaley’s group have learnt the 1st 6 sounds from Set 3 which are ea oi o-e i-e a-e u-e. Miss Sheridan completed her assessments on Thursday ready for the new groups starting after half term. She has said she can see some great progress.

On Monday morning we went on a spring hunt round the school grounds and were able to find everything on our checklist other than a lamb – but we know the lambs are not too far away as we can all remember our special visitor ‘Cake’ from a few weeks ago. We found blossom, seedlings, buds, daffodils and lots more.

St George’s class have been lucky to share their learning with Mr Hetherington and Miss Protheroe this week as they have been covering in the classroom as well as Mrs Fisher. It has been lovely to hear all about the lovely play that they have observed as well as telling Mrs Whaley how much progress they can see everyone has made this half term.

On Thursday morning we all went into the hall to say a special goodbye to Miss Protheroe as she leaves us on Friday. We wish her all the best in her future career.

We have continued to make the most out of the brighter and warmer weather this week and have enjoyed spending time in the EYFS garden especially as we rebuilt the 3 little pigs how with bricks and cemented them together with shaving foam!

On Friday we went to Church to listen to Rev. Nathaneal sharing the Easter story. Earlier on in the week everyone in school made their own palm leaf which we waved in church.

After half term we will be using 1 core text to focus our ‘Super Six’ comprehension questions around as well as ‘drawing Club’. This is so we get to know the text really well across lots of opportunities across the week. Our next core text is going to be ‘Superworm’ by Julia Donaldson as we move onto our next topic of Minibeasts. To link in with this our role play area has been changed to be a minibeast investigation station – I am sure that there will be lots of creepy crawlies to be found!

Wishing you all a happy and sunny Easter!
