10.01.25 The Train Ride

12.01.24

This week our ‘Super Six’ story was ‘The Train Ride’’ by June Crebbin.  A little girl and her mother board the train in town and set off on a journey through the countryside. As they travel, the girl looks out of the window, asking "What shall I see? What shall I see?" And what does she see? Sheep, cows, horses and much more!

Our ‘Drawing Club’ focus story was “Winnie Flies Again” by Valerie Thomas and Korky Paul. Winnie the Witch loves travelling by broomstick. Sadly, when the sky starts filling up with all kinds of flying machines, Winnie and Wilbur have a few mid-air crashes and a few more near misses. Winnie tries a little magic to turn her broomstick into a bicycle, a skateboard, even a horse. But the accidents still happen. Perhaps Winnie needs to look no further than the end of her nose for an answer to her problems . . .

This week our rainbow challenges have been:

Maths – cut and stick the numbers in the correct order (1-5)

Fine motor – colour in the transport picture

Literacy – use your phonics to write a word to match the picture

Funky fingers – use the tweezers to pick up the pom poms to put into Winnie’s cauldron

Creative – use the resources to make a ‘unique’ creation

Phonics – read and copy x5 green words

ICT – find the missing letter to complete the word (Balloon Phonics)

In maths this week Reception have started with their new block of learning called ‘Growing 6,7 and 8’ and have been looking at how these numbers can be represented using a 10s frame, where they appear on a number track and which number is 1 more or 1 less.

Nursery have been looking at the numeral 3 and have collected different objects to make the total of 3. They have also looked at ways different objects can be arranged to make 3 and also how to subitise 3 and know that there is 3 rather than counting every time.

This weeks nursery rhyme has been ‘Three Blind Mice’ which can be found at the following link; Three blind mice - BBC Teach

In phonics this week Reception have been split into different groups after the completed their assessments last term with Miss Sheridan. The children have been continuing to work on recognising the first set of sounds but have started to learn the second set of sounds including the rhymes to help remember them. The children have been working in different groups with Mrs Whaley, Miss Protheroe and Mrs Parker and the books they have been taking home are directly linked to the learning they have been focusing on in class. The children are very excited about these new challenges and we can’t wait to see how much progress they make over this half term.

On Monday during our PE lesson with NUFC with Thomas and we were working in small teams completing different circuit activities. We finished off with a game of ‘stuck in the mud’ which is something we have played a few times and are getting better at using different strategies to succeed.

On Tuesday we had our first CoJo’s session with Sam. These sessions are based around teamwork and help to support the children’s Personal, Social and Emotional Development. The programme and activities are based around developing one of these key skills:

Resilience
Empathy
Self Awareness
Passion
Excellence
Communication
Teamwork

In RE this week we have started our new block of learning thinking about which stories are special to Christians. We talked about our own favourite stories and what happens in them as well as the reasons why we have picked them. Over the course of the next few weeks we will be listening to some familiar stories from the Bible and talking about the messages they have within them and the different reasons as to why they are important.

This week we have started our new theme which is ‘Transport’ and our role play area has been changed into a train and train station to link with our 1st focus story of the half term. There are plenty of opportunities for writing in this area; writing train tickets, train reports and taking peoples food orders in 1st class! We have really enjoyed being in the area this week taking on different roles and developing our imagination through a range of story lines based upon past experiences and other stories the children have read.

Next week our ‘Super Six’ book is ‘Duck in the Truck’ by Jez Alborough and our Drawing Club focus is “Oi Get Off Our Train” by John Burningham.
