This week our ‘Super Six’ story was ‘Kipper’s New Pet’’ by.  Kipper's friend Pig only wants a pet for his birthday, so that is exactly what Kipper buys him: a little hamster called Roly. But Kipper starts to play with Roly before Pig's birthday party and before he knows it he has missed the party and completely fallen for little Roly and cannot bear to give him away.

Our ‘Drawing Club’ focus was the original animation Road Runner where we have enjoyed lots of adventures between Road Runner and The Cayote and all the chaos and mayhem they get up to by trying to trick each other.

This week our rainbow challenges have been:

Maths – taking away number sentences using a 10s frame and counters

Fine motor – cut around the lines to make a spiral animal

Literacy – write a caption to describe Kipper the Dog using phonic knowledge

Funky fingers – match the animals to their homes using the paper clips to secure them

Creative – make an animal to be displayed in the role play area

Phonics – read the words and colour the pictures that match

ICT – find the missing letter to complete the word (Balloon Phonics)

In maths this week Reception have continued their work on subtraction using 10s frames and counters. We have also had a go at using a number line as a different way of finding the answer to different calculations by counting back. We have been consolidating this learning during Ten Town time where the children have been given 5 sums each day to complete to reinforce their learning. This week they have become really confident at this and are able to explain the difference between – and + and talk about the totals being either smaller or bigger than the original number depending on whether they are adding or taking away.

Nursery have been looking at weight and mass this week and have been exploring using different weighing scales. They have collected items from around the classroom and talked about which ones are the ‘heaviest’ and ‘lightest’ and talking about whether the heavy things make the balances go up or down.

This weeks nursery rhyme has been ‘5 Little Monkey’s Swinging in a Tree’ which can be found using this link: Five little monkeys swinging from a tree - BBC Teach

In phonics this week Reception have continued to work in their groups recapping Set 2 sounds with Mrs Whaley and Mrs Parker when reading and writing different words. The children in Miss Protheroe’s group have been learning the first few Set 3 sounds.

We have made the most out of the brighter and warmer weather this week and have enjoyed spending time in the EYFS garden and using the climbing equipment on the wood chips.

On Friday it was Comic Relief and we came into school wearing something red or something funny to raise money for the charity. We also had a very special visitor from Low Steads Farm – Farmer Ian brought a lamb for us to meet and cuddle. We all had a great time and it was very kind of him to take time out of his busy lambing schedule.

Next week our ‘Super Six’ book is ‘All Pigs are Beautiful’ by Dick King Smith and our Drawing Club focus is the popular story of ‘Farmer Duck’ by Martin Waddell.
