17.01.25 Oi Get Off Our Train

17.01.25

This week our ‘Super Six’ story was ‘Duck in the Truck’, a classic story by Jez Alborough.  As Duck is driving home his truck gets stuck in the mud. Frog and Sheep come to his aid, but it’s only when Goat arrives that a solution is found.

Our ‘Drawing Club’ focus story was ‘Oi……Get Off Our Train’ by John Burningham. A little boy sets off on a round-the-world night train to dreamland with only his toy dog for company. But soon all sorts of endangered animals are asking if they can jump up and join them on their journey. . .

This week our rainbow challenges were the same as last week as lots of the children didn’t complete them all last week due to a number of different reasons. There are a whole set of new ones planned for this week as we are back into routine after the Christmas holidays!

In maths this week Reception have continued with their block of learning called ‘Growing 6,7 and 8’ and have been thinking about combining 2 different groups and completing some simple addition calculations. We have talked about plus, add, equals and altogether and used different counting objects to support their learning.

Nursery have been continuing to look at the numeral 3 in more depth. We have been counting to 3, having a go at writing 3 using the interactive whiteboard resources linked to Ten Town, how we can make 3 in different ways and also investigated triangles.

This weeks nursery rhyme has been ‘Three Little Kittens’ which can be found at the following link; Three Little Kittens, They Lost Their Mittens – English Songs for Kids | #englishsongsforkids (youtube.com)

In phonics this week Reception have been working in their separate groups to focus on the sounds and aspects of learning they need to consolidate before moving onto the next level. In Miss Protheroe’s group the children have been learning some ‘Set 2’ sounds from the Read Write Inc scheme and have been reading stories which contain these sounds. The children in Mrs Parker’s group have been revisiting ‘Set 1’ sounds and using the magnetic letters to make simple CVC words to read. The children have been using this knowledge when writing and have been encouraged to have a go at writing independently using the sounds that they can hear in the words they want to write. Over the next few weeks this group will be focusing on ‘special friends’ sh, th, nk, ng, qu and ch.

We have really enjoyed our PE lessons this week and we used the yoga mats and followed Jamie on the screen take us through the story Moana which included different yoga poses as the story developed. Everyone listened carefully and tried really hard to copy the moves – some of them were harder than they looked!

On Tuesday morning we had a special visitor come to join us in our class. Miss Dodds has kindly offered to volunteer and hear the children read each week. This is a great asset and we thank her very much for saying she would like to work with us.

On Wednesday morning we took our learning outside and set up a train like the one in the story of ‘Oi get off our train’ and had masks for the different animals and took it in turn to be the different characters and train driver. We retold the story interactively and we reenacted the story not just once but 4 times in total!!

Next week our ‘Super Six’ book is ‘The Great Race’ as we prepare for learning all about Chinese New Year and our Drawing Club focus is the original animation of ‘Whacky Races’.
