28.06.24 Pirate Pete and his Parrot

28.06.24

This week our ‘Super Six’ was ‘Molly Rodgers Pirate Girl’ by Cornella Funke. Ferocious Captain Firebeard and the crew of the Horrible Haddock rule the high seas. But the dastardly pirates meet their match when they kidnap a small, feisty girl called Molly as she sails to visit her granny. But Molly refuses to cower in fear. She knows something the pirates don't – the real pirate to fear is none other than Molly's own mum, and she won't be pleased to find her daughter kidnapped!

Our ‘Drawing Club’ story was the story ‘Pirate Pete and his Parrot’ by Jenny Woods. Anchors away for an action-packed voyage with Pirate Pete and his mischievous, purple parrot. Pirate Pete sails the seven seas on the Jolly Crossbone. It would be the perfect life if not for his chatty parrot always getting him into trouble. When his ship is ambushed by marauding pirates, will Pete's parrot save the day, mor make it much, much worse?

In phonics this week Reception have been working hard to consolidate all of their recent learning in preparation for their final Read Write Inc assessment next week. Mrs Whaley’s group have been focusing on reading words which contain the 1st 10 diagraphs; sh ch th ng nk ay ee igh ow oo. Miss Protheroe’s group have been consolidating all Set 2 sounds as well as beginning to learn the next block of Set 3 sounds.

Nursery have been working with Mrs Archer to recap all of the initial sounds and playing ‘Fred games’ to listen to the individual sounds and say the word. They have also been looking at simple CVC words and using their sound knowledge to read some simple words on flashcards. As they have learnt all the rhymes for the letters they have been practising writing these in down in their mark making books, shaving foam and sand trays.

Reception have been recapping their knowledge of 2D shapes and have been making pictures using circles, rectangles, squares and triangles. They have also been using colour codes to follow simple instructions to complete different colouring shape pictures. Nursery have been using the big dice to recognise and count the number of spots they have ro9lled. They have then been counting out objects to match the number rolled.

In RE this week the children have been investigating what key features are common within a Church. We watched a video which explained about the font, the alter, the stained glass windows and the ropes for the Church bells. We are looking forward to going to the Church in Longhoughton next week to meet Rev. Nathaneal to see if we can spot these features and see what else we can see.

On Thursday afternoon the children enjoyed spending time with Mrs Parker and listened to different sea shanty songs linking in with our pirate topic and played instruments to join in with the different beats they could hear from the music.

We also found out which classes we are going to be in next year. Some Nursery children are staying with us in Nursery for another year and our current Nursery will be moving into Reception. We will continue to work together as a unit and Mrs Whaley will still be our teacher. The current Reception children will move into Year 1 where they will join our current Year 1 children and will be taught by Miss Protheroe until Miss Campbell returns from her maternity leave.

We have lots of things to look forward over the next 3 weeks; visits to Church, a beach day, a pirate PE day, end of year celebrations and lots more.

We had planned to change our role play area this week but the children are having so much fun in our pirate ship and stories they are acting out are brilliant so we will keep it for another week!

Next week our ‘Super Six’ book is ‘Munch, bunch pirate lunch’ by Bloomsbury and our ‘Drawing Club’ traditional tale is ‘Sinbad the Sailor’.
